The 2024 Supreme Court rulings that ended the tradition of Chevron Deference, including Loper Bright v. Raimondo, dealt a serious blow to the value of expertise and rigorous research across the US federal executive branch. These rulings certainly present new complications to those who work in single-discipline environments solving "tame" problems. However, these complications are likely to be magnified for those working in transdisciplinary environments solving complex, "wicked" problems.
In this presentation, Jay Rickabaugh of North Carolina State University provides an overview of the NSF-funded Science and Technology for Phosphorus Sustainability (STEPS) Center and how the center is investigating the myriad challenges of this important, but lesser-known, environmental challenge. He also presents information about how his research projects have investigated how local governments work together to manage nutrients including phosphorus.
