He served as an attorney and judge in Cook County, then Governor of Illinois from 1893-1897. He led efforts to create the higher education system we have in Illinois and spearheaded social reform. Governor Altgeld laid the cornerstone to Altgeld Hall on October 1, 1895 before a crowd of 30,000. A faculty panel will discuss his many contributions to NIU, the state and the nation. Faculty are Daniel McConkie, Professor of Law; Ferald Bryan, Associate Professor of Communication; and April Clark, Associate Professor of Political Science, and will moderated by Alicia Schatteman, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs.
