STEM Café: Farm of the Future: Food Systems Innovation and Vertical Farming

Food deserts, extreme weather, resource shortages. People may be surprised to learn how closely our food system is knit with climate change – and how precarious our current situation is. At the same time, innovative research and technology are making crop production more efficient and versatile. Hear from Bryan Flower, chef, farmer, educator and NIU Assistant Director for Food System Innovation, and Kevin Martin, an associate professor of engineering technology who conducts research into vertical farming, LED grow lights and other innovations that have the power to improve food systems.
