Come to the historic Egyptian Theatre in downtown DeKalb and enjoy the beauty and imagination of anime at the Second Annual NIU Anime Film Festival. This event is free for NIU students and the public (not including concessions). Attendees can also participate in a raffle that includes a Hayao Miyazaki boxed set.
Mirai (2018) at 6 p.m.: A young boy named Kun feels forgotten by his family when his little sister Mirai arrives. Running away from home, Kun stumbles upon a magical garden that serves as a time-travelling gateway where he encounters his mother as a little girl and has a series of adventures with his baby sister, who is all grown up, opening a new perspective on his world. Ghost in the Shell (1995) at 8 p.m.: In this Japanese animation classic, cyborg federal agent Maj. Motoko Kusanagi (Mimi Woods) trails “The Puppet Master” (Abe Lasser), who illegally hacks into the computerized minds of cyborg-human hybrids. Her pursuit of a man who can modify the identity of strangers leaves Motoko pondering her own makeup and what life might be like if she had more human traits. With her partner (Richard George), she corners the hacker, but her curiosity about her identity sends the case in an unforeseen direction.
