Panel Discussion: I’m Sorry, That Book Is No Longer Available Here
Thursday, February 24, 2022 6:30 PM
About this Event
Challenges to books in public libraries and other venues have a long history in the United States. Books have been banned for sexual content; controversial language and topics; racial issues; and more. More recently, book banning has resurfaced in school districts around the U.S. with the removal of books by Art Spiegelman, Toni Morrison, Khaled Hosseini, Ibram Kendi, George Johnson and others. While most people agree that adults should have access to books, there is a lack of consensus on where, when and how children should access content and books as well as who should make those decisions.
Join us at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, for an online panel discussion on the issues surrounding book banning in public school libraries with experts from NIU’s faculty.
Panel:
- Wayne Finley, Associate Professor, Libraries.
- Melanie Koss, Professor, Curriculum and Instruction
- Patrick Roberts, Associate Professor, Leadership, Educational Psychology and Foundations
