Online STEAM Camp: Exploring Careers in Science

To build a career in science, you’ll need more than just factual knowledge. You’ll also need curiosity, wonder and imagination, as well as a healthy skepticism, to devise experiments, create original solutions to unique problems and communicate what you know to others.

Join us to begin developing the skills and mindset you need to become a professional scientist. We’ll guide you through the steps to design and run your own unique experiment at home. Learn how to ask a meaningful question and how to test it. Discover the engineering and technology that goes into running your experiment. Practice presenting your results and explaining why they’re important.

You’ll also hear from working scientists in a variety of careers to learn about their career paths and what their jobs actually look like. From healthcare to technology, from environmental research to food labs, all types of fields need passionate and creative scientists like you!

This camp is four weeks long. Campers will spend two days a week in virtual face-to-face classes for approximately three hours each day, as they collaborate with their peers, meet with professional scientists and get feedback from their instructors. Campers devote the remaining days to working on their individual project, approximately 2-3 hours each day. This time is generally spent away from the screen, but that may vary depending on the project. Campers are encouraged to work more than these hours if they’d like to enhance their projects and pursue their interest in science careers.

Required materials include a tablet, phone or computer with camera and microphone for virtual face-to-face activities; reliable internet for uploading and downloading videos and for virtual meetings; and office supplies such as paper, ruler and pencil. Some special materials might be needed to construct the experiment, but this will vary depending on the camper’s choice. The nature of this project is that the campers design their own experiment. The availability of resources acts as a realistic constraint but will not negatively impact individual campers. This camp is recommended for students in grades 9-12.
