**ONLINE** Implementing Linguistic Justice in Writing Assessment with Dr. April Baker-Bell

About this Event
Friday, November 3, 2023 from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM
College-level writing assignments frequently insist on “academic prose” or other sets of implicit criteria that dictate students use a certain kind of voice to establish writerly credibility. The implicit and explicit expectations surrounding the value of this voice over others leaves many students wary, or worse, feeling devalued in and alienated by writing-intensive classrooms. In this workshop, Dr. April Baker-Bell, an award-winning transdisciplinary teacher-researcher-activist and Associate Professor of Language, Culture, and Justice in Education at the University of Michigan, will introduce the linguistic justice framework and the ways that our implicit and explicit value-judgements about language and identity can create barriers to student retention and academic success.
