Northern Illinois University (NIU) holds firm to our commitment in serving our diverse student, staff, faculty, alumni and greater DeKalb community. It is a value embedded in every facet of our university, from our mission and vision to our practiced values. For more than a decade, the range of diverse individuals attracted to NIU has fostered more opportunities for growth and strengthened our -centric approach to success for all students across the institution. Through our mission to serve our state, and through the dedicated leadership of many students, faculty and staff, our Hispanic/Latinx student enrollment continues to rise – as does the number of students who are the first in their families to attend college, African American/Black and/or Pell-eligible.
NIU strives to be a Huskie serving institution, and this is reflected in our commitment to inclusive excellence and creating an environment where Huskies feel a sense of belonging, that they are valued and that they can thrive. NIU became an Emerging Hispanic Serving Institution (e-HSI) in 2015, when our Hispanic/Latinx students enrollment reached at least 15% of the student body. Hispanic/Latinx students now represent 25% of NIU’s undergraduate full-time student population, and we will soon be recognized as a fully designated HSI.
In this institute, we collaborate with NIU's Faculty Academy on Cultural Competence and Equity to discuss what it means to be an emerging Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and a fully designated HSI. Jade Silva Tovar, Nancy Dominguez-Fret, and Ana Velazquez will also introduce opportunities to address how we enact intentionally serving Latino/a/x/e and other racially minoritized and marginalized students in the classroom and beyond.
