Come join the Autism Caregiver Group for a fun safety event at the DeKalb Police Station! We will meet with DeKalb’s School Resource Officers, Social Workers, and Commander Steve Lekkas to learn about how families of children with autism may interact with police at school, home, and in the community. We’ll learn tips about what to do if your child wanders, what parents can expect at schools, what services their social workers can provide, and information to help if there is an emergency at your home. As always, NIU undergraduate student volunteers will be available to provide child-friendly activities with kids. Families will also be invited to take a tour of the police station and meet with officers. The presentation will be in English; Spanish language supports will be available.

¡Acompaña el Autism Caregiver Group para un evento de seguridad divertido en la Estación de Policía de DeKalb! Nos reuniremos con los Oficiales de Recursos Escolares de DeKalb, Trabajadores Sociales, y el Comandante Steve Lekkas para aprender acerca de cómo las familias de niños con autismo pueden interactuar con la policía en la escuela, en el hogar, y en la comunidad. Aprenderemos consejos sobre qué hacer si su hijo/a se desplaza, qué pueden esperar los padres en las escuelas, qué servicios pueden proporcionar sus trabajadores sociales e información para ayudar si hay una emergencia en su casa. Como siempre, los estudiantes de NIU estarán disponibles para ofrecer actividades para los niños. Las familias también serán invitadas a recorrer la comisaría y a reunirse con los agentes. La presentación será en inglés; habrá asistencia en español.
