MLK Service Week

MLK Service WeekFrom Tuesday, Jan. 22, through Friday, Jan. 25, NIU will host several events celebrating King’s life and legacy. The week will promote civic reflection, community service, equality and awareness of social issues Americans still face today.

Four events are planned:

Project on Civic Reflection: The Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Revisited

This discussion, which takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, in the Heritage Room of the Holmes Student Center is sponsored by the Interfaith Challenge Team.
Advocacy in Action: NIU Cultural Centers

Come learn about the different diverse organizations at NIU. This resource fair, sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the Glass Gallery of the Holmes Student Center.
A Class Divided (Video Presentation)

This open discussion on social inequality and race relations will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at the sponsor Center for Black Studies, located just south of the parking ramp on Carroll Avenue.
Reading and Leading with the NIU Huskies

Friday, Jan. 25, is story time with elementary school students in DeKalb Community Unit School District 428. Sponsored by Alphi Phi, the readings will take place at various times in the local schools.

Meanwhile, the MLK Week of Service committee will host a week-long food drive for Salvation Army. Donate to those in need by dropping off non-perishable foods at posted locations and the events.
