LLI: Magma Cum Loudly - The World's Most Wondrous Hot Spots
Beautiful yet foreboding, often quite deadly, the world's volcanoes have fashioned compelling landscapes, mythical legends, and scientific wonder. In this course we will travel around the earth to visit some of our planet’s most explosive (volcanically speaking) geologic wonders. The top 60 miles of the earth's surface, the lithosphere, is made up of tectonic plates which collide, pull apart or slide past each other. The action of these moving plates often creates spectacular, incendiary geology. Some of the areas we will examine include the Greek island Santorini, Japan’s Mount Fuji, Iceland, Yellowstone and Hawai’i Volcanoes National Parks. Fire yourself up for this explosive journey.
Convener: Linda Fulton, a retired teacher, has convened a number of classes dealing with the wonders of our planet.
The Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI), established in 2000, is a member-directed group of individuals primarily age 50 plus who enjoy learning in informal, flexible, non-competitive groups and like connecting with peers who share their interests.
