Lambda Sigma and Mortar Board Honor Societies Seek New Members
Two honor societies with long histories at NIU are recruiting new members for the 2021-2022 year. Both organizations recognize students’ accomplishments in scholarship, leadership, and service and provide opportunities for eligible students to enhance their achievements in those areas. Faculty and staff are encouraged to recommend outstanding students for both groups.
Lambda Sigma is specifically for second-year NIU students. Applications are being accepted now from first-year students who
have completed at least 12 semester hours (but no more than 36 semester hours) with a minimum 3.0 GPA. To be considered for membership in the 2021-2022 chapter, please complete our online application. The application opens Feb. 1 and closes March 8.
Mortar Board members are selected from the junior class to serve as active members in their senior year at NIU. They must have attained at least a 3.20 grade point average with at least 75 semester hours completed and not have a graduation date earlier than December 2021. The application can be accessed here.
Both honor societies emphasize campus and community service and provide opportunities for high-achieving students to work together across academic disciplines. Both also are members of the Association of College Honor Societies, the only certifying agency for college and university honor societies.
Lambda Sigma has had a chapter on NIU’s campus since 1954. Mortar Board celebrates its 50th anniversary here in November 2021.
To nominate students for either Mortar Board or Lambda Sigma or for more information, contact Dr. Denise Rode, advisor for both groups, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
