Keynote Address: Food Allergies for Huskies

Denise A. Bunning, the NIU College of Education's Educator in Residence for Spring 2019, is an educator, support group leader and advocate who works to improve the lives of children with food allergies. Denise earned her M.S.Ed. in Special Education from Northern Illinois University.

She co-founded MOCHA (Mothers of Children Having Allergies) – a support group for food-allergic families. She serves on the board of governors for Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), the founders’ board of Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, and the women’s board of Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital.

Denise and her husband of 27 years, Dave, are the parents of two sons who have life-threatening food allergies and related issues. Both sons are now adults and thriving.

Our Educator in Residence program invites successful alumni back to NIU and the College of Education to share practical tips and tools that prepare students for life after graduation.
