Gallery Talk: Dr. Matthew Krystal on Maya weaving
Join us for a viewing and discussion of the documentary, How to Jaspe, featuring K'iche' Maya weavers of two different cooperatives based in San Miguel Totonicapán, Guatemala. Dr. Krystal will discuss the creative deployment of the distinctive Toto blouse design in a wide range of artisanal products made for local and international buyers. This practice reflects an astute marketing strategy that differentiates Totonicapense artisanal works in a highly competitive market, while also providing Totonicapenses an expanding set of objects to communicate multi-layered identities in novel ways and settings.
Matthew Krystal (B.A. Anthropology, Washington University in Saint Louis; PhD Sociocultural Anthropology, Tulane University) is a faculty member of North Central College with interests in Mesoamerica, Native North America, ethnographic film, applied anthropology, environmental anthropology, anthropology of religion, and Indigenous peoples’ rights, issues, and self-representation. Supported by a Fulbright grant, Krystal conducted dissertation field research in the K’iche’ Maya community of San Miguel Totonicapán, Guatemala.
