Designing Engagement for Equity:
Building Inclusive Community Engagement with Human-centered Design
A workshop with Jim Woodell, Ph.D.

Thursday, Oct. 24, 2024, in the Altgeld Hall Auditorium
Two options:
Morning only: 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
OR
All Day: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (lunch provided)
Apply design thinking and human-centered design principles to your research, teaching or partnerships, and benefit from a more empathetic, inclusive community-engaged project. You’ll leave with the tools you need to elevate your community partnerships, classroom projects and community-focused research.
Attend the morning session to learn the basics of design thinking. Stay for the full day to delve deeper into incorporating human-centered design in your specific community-engagement action plan.
Tentative schedule
Morning: Principles and Practices of Design Thinking and Equity
- Introduction and overview of design thinking.
- Understanding human-centered design.
- Applying human-centered design to community-engaged research, teaching and public service.
- Reflections on belonging, equity and inclusion.
Afternoon: Hands-on Workshop – Action Planning: Human-centered Design for Engagement and Equity
- Designing Equity, Preparing for Action.
- Implementing human-centered design for maximum effectiveness.
- Action planning to move curricula and engagement initiatives forward.
