Author, Dr. Claire Dunning will discuss her book "Nonprofit Neighborhoods" which explores how and why governments delegated the responsibility for solving urban inequality to the nonprofit sector beginning after World War II. Her research sheds light on the histories of race, democracy, and capitalism, revealing how the federal government funded and deputized nonprofits to help individuals in need, and in so doing avoided addressing the structural inequities that necessitated such action in the first place. Claire Dunning is an assistant professor in the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she is an affiliated faculty member in the Do Good Institute and the History Department.
