“The Rooms Where it Happened: NIU Alum and Indonesian Democracy”
Friday, April 19, noon
Peters Campus Life Building 100 and online
Indonesia's democratic successes were no foregone conclusion in the late 1990s. Global realignments, democratic activists and public anger brought down the dictatorship in the 1998 Reformasi movement. Less well known is the pivotal role that Indonesian NIU graduates played a key role in the democratic transition. Relying on new research, Dr. Jones examines the Reformasi using new sources, while combining insights from his insider role as an election monitor in Indonesia's 2024 Presidential Election.
For more than 30 years, Eric Jones has been a frequent visitor and scholar of Indonesia. His earlier work examined early modern Indonesian history through the lens of dramatic social and economic change and his most recent research has looked at democratization in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
