CSEAS Friday Lecture: Dr. Tamara Loos, Cornell University, Department of History
The Center for Southeast Asian Studies Presents:
Southeast Asia Lecture Series
Speaker: Dr. Tamara Loos, Cornell University, Department of History
Title: “The Impact of Judith Butler’s 1990 Work, Gender Trouble, in Southeast Asia”
Judith Butler’s 1990 work, Gender Trouble, has become canonical in gender and sexuality studies, but its impact in Southeast Asia is less well known. Dr. Loos explores the applicability and limits of her transformative work in contexts outside Europe and North America, where cultural and religious norms significantly differ. In particular, she considers what we might learn from a comparative analysis of the categories of transgender and third gender, which have distinct historical trajectories in Southeast Asia and the US.
Dr. Tamara Loos is a Professor in the History Department at Cornell University. She publishes on sex and politics, transnational sexualities, comparative law, sodomy, the family, suffrage, intimate violence, rape and notions of liberty in Thailand. Her most recent book, Bones around My Neck: The Life and Exile of a Prince Provocateur, narrates the story of Prince Prisdang Chumsai (1852–1935), who served as Siam’s first diplomat to Europe during the most dramatic moment of Siam’s political history, when its independence was threatened by European imperialism.
