Act 1 Raising Voices
America has a complicated relationship with immigrant populations. While the US proclaims welcoming borders in icons such as the Statue of Liberty, the realities can be quite different. Some populations are welcomed and successfully find a place in the American experiment, while others struggle to even gain entry. The first half of our concert offers a program of immigrant stories and African American Spirituals woven together to bring new voices and perspectives to the concert hall. This concert will explore how the musical settings interact with the text to create compelling concert experiences and help expand the dialogue required for positive change in our society. Through the fusion of music and text, stories are transformed into powerful narratives that can change hearts and minds, tear down the shroud of “the other” and reveal our shared humanity.
Act II It's Elemental
The second half of the concert offers music inspired by nature's elements such as Wind, Water, and Fire. In texts ranging from diverse sources such as Langston Hughes to Shakespeare our repertoire explores how metaphors of nature keenly illuminate human experiences such as fear, hope, sorrow, perseverance, and renewal.
