Community radicals: settlement houses in Chicago
The settlement movement began in the 1880s in England in response to growing urbanization and poverty in Victorian England. In Chicago, Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Star founded Hull House in 1889, the first of nearly 40 in the city. Dr. Schatteman will discuss the founding and leaders of the Chicago Commons Settlement Houses, one of the few to survive into the 21st century. Dr. Schatteman is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Center for Nonprofit and NGO Studies. She is part of the Oxford Study Abroad taking place in the summer 2023 and will teach a course on the settlement house movement which began in London and then spread throughout the world.
