The Department of Economics and the Institute for the Study of the Environment, Sustainability, and Energy are hosting a two-day Benefit-Cost Analysis (BCA) Workshop on November 13-14, featuring environmental economist Dr. Allen Bellas from Metro State University.

Benefit-cost analysis is a systematic approach to estimating the benefits and costs of policy alternatives, especially of actions that provide a public good (health impacts, pollution clean-up, etc.). BCA is often used to determine options which provide the best, least costly approach to achieving positive impacts.
The workshop consists of three sessions:
1. BCA Basics – How to Do an Honest BCA in Ten Steps
Wednesday, 3:30-5 pm
This session is open to all, and will be accessible to anyone interested/BCA beginners. Undergrad students and community members interested in about BCA are highly encouraged to attend!
2. Office of Management & Budget Guidelines – How BCA Should Be Done, Mostly
Thursday, 1-2:45 pm
This session will focus on the latest guidelines from the OMB and how BCA is included in government policy evaluation. This session is aimed at researchers, including faculty and graduate students.
Ice Cream & Coffee Break
Thursday, 2:45-3:15 pm
3. BCA Techniques and Applications, For Good or for Evil
Thursday, 3:15-5 pm
This session will give an overview of analysis techniques and examples of successful (and dubious) BCAs. This session is aimed at researchers, including faculty and graduate students.
Together, these sessions will cover fundamental BCA concepts, official guidelines, and real-world applications, offering insights for both beginners and experienced practitioners. The workshop aims to provide valuable tools for decision-making in environmental and public policy. Participants are welcome to attend any or all sessions, allowing flexibility for different schedules and interests.
