The 2026 World Music Festival (April 7-April 11)
Sonic Tapestry: Global Traditions & Cultural Crossroads
The NIU School of Music is proud to present the 2026 World Music Festival, a five-day immersive journey through the sounds, traditions, and contemporary innovations of global music. Running from April 7 through April 11, the festival will transform the NIU campus into a vibrant cultural crossroads, featuring traditional masterworks alongside world-premiere compositions.
This festival is more than a series of concerts; it is a celebration of how music bridges cultures and disciplines. From the intricate melodies of Thailand to the cutting-edge fusion of modern composers, we are providing a 'hub' for global artistry right here on NIU campus in DeKalb.
Festival Schedule (All concerts are free and open to the public)
- April 7 (7:00-8:00pm, Recital Hall) | Music of Thailand: An exploration of the rich tonal tapestry and traditional instruments of Thailand and Laos complemented by a cultural exhibition in the lobby where participants can immerse themselves in the vibrant traditions of Songkran (Thai New Year) through displays and festive activities celebrating the spirit of New Year.

- David Gordon’s World Premiere: A first-look at a new work that features a microtonally tuned berimbau quartet performing a loping, singular melody that eventually dissolves into a vast "world orchestra" of over 19 instruments, including gamelan, bagpipes, and harpsichord.
