2022 Lincoln Lecture

Presented by Camilla Townsend, distinguished professor of history at Rutgers University. She is author of eight books on early Native American, early American and Latin American history including “Annals of Native America: How the Nahuas of
Colonial Mexico Kept Their History Alive” (2016), winner of the Beveridge Prize, the Howard Cline Award and the Arthur Whittaker Prize.

This lecture draws on Townsend’s 2019 award winning
book, “Fifth Sun: A New History of the Aztecs”, to argue that when we consult the available Nahuatl-language sources, a new understanding emerges of the famed Mesoamerican culture. Townsend will also discuss why modern people seem to have been loath to do this.
