Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Student Conference
The 2015 WGSS Student Conference explores social justice and incarceration issues. The U.S. incarcerates more people per capita than any other nation in the world. As of 2013, over 2 million people were incarcerated in local jails, as well as state and federal prisons throughout the country, representing an increase of over 500 percent from 30 years ago. While the majority of prisoners are men of color (mostly African American and Latino), since 1980, the number of women imprisoned has increased at a much higher rate than the number of men.
