Travel with a Professor: "The Story of Us: Becoming Human with Donald Johanson"
Who better to tell our story than the man who discovered Lucy?
Donald Johanson, Ph.D., is the director of the Institute of Human Origins and professor of anthropology at Arizona State University. For the past 30 years he has conducted field and laboratory research in paleoanthropology. Most notably, he unearthed the 3.18 million year old hominid skeleton popularly known as "Lucy." That 1974 discovery helped place a missing branch on the family tree as we knew it.
As the National Geographic Live website explains, since then, much has changed in our understanding of the human family tree. Discoveries from Indonesia to South Africa have filled gaps in our knowledge, indicating a more complex line of descent than previously thought. Johanson's own understanding of Lucy and her significance has evolved along with those finds and he will share what the new evidence tells us about our prehistoric ancestors.
Professor Dan Gebo, NIU Department of Anthropology, will travel with program participants and offer a Q/A on the ride to and from Madison.
