The overall purpose is to educate and reduce earthquake risk. The field trip route includes natural and manmade features, historic sites, and engineered structures that show a basic overview of the earthquake hazards and earthquake risks in the central US.
This field trip starts and ends in Cahokia, IL. Along the way we will make about a half-dozen stops in southern Illinois, southeast Missouri, western Kentucky, and western Tennessee. We will see field evidence of past earthquakes on the New Madrid fault system and related earthquake source zones, as well as engineering projects and challenges unique to central US earthquake country.
